Barbara Hickmott: The Work of Byron Katie

With songs by Fiona & Gorwel Owen

An opportunity to explore what Byron Katie calls the Work, a process that clears the mind; a way to identify and question the thoughts that cause all the suffering in the world. The process is simple, radical and life-changing. Barbara Hickmott has been deeply involved in the Work for the past five years, attending many training events with Byron Katie and promoting the Work here in North Wales.

A day of experiment and exploration.  Using meditation and voice and choosing from a range of art forms, we invite ourselves into the present moment (that elusive ‘here and now’) and playfully attempt to bring this experience into form.

Mandy Simone is an experienced workshop leader with a special interest in voice and sound healing.

01/05/2009  Catch a Lift on the Next Raven 7.15 for 7.30 pm £3/£2

In Celtic myth the raven is the herald of the type of change which can often be challenging and even upsetting. However through the “resolution of the opposites”, the seemingly fierce raven can bring a special kind of magic through which that which hurts most is eventually profoundly healing.

Steve Gladwin is a storyteller, performer and teacher with over twenty five years experience in all kinds of group-work. In November 2006 he lost his partner Celia. Her passing taught him many things about life, death, and ravens, swans and hares in particular. In ‘Catch a Lift on the Next Raven’ he weaves together the story of Celia’s life and passing with story, myth, poetry and above all the inspiration of the animals.

This piece lasts approx 90 minutes and Steve encourages time for question and reflection afterwards.

Ym myth Celtaidd mae’r gigfran yn rhagflaenydd o fath o newid sydd yn aml yn heriol, a hyd yn oed yn creu gofid. Er hynny, drwy’r hyn a elwir yn Saesneg ‘[the] resolution of the opposites’, gall y gigfran – sydd yn gallu edrych ffyrnig ar yr olwg gyntaf – ddyfod â math arbennig o ddewiniaeth, lle mae’r hyn sy’n dolurio fwyaf, yn y pen draw yn iachau’n ddwys.

Dr. Noel G. Charlton has a varied life-time experience in industry and commerce, teaching, self-sufficiency small-holding, environmental activism & rural sociology. With his wife he initiated the Rivendell Community – a residential community in Cumbria which offered short periods of residence to some 1200 people in need of respite from stress. In the later community years he commenced environmental and philosophical study with Schumacher College, Devon and the Institute for Environment, Philosophy and Public Policy, University of Lancaster, studying with many world leaders in environmental philosophy. This work has led to a specialism in the work of Gregory Bateson – a profound thinker, critically important in relation to our present ecological extremity. Joan Poulson is a poet & children’s writer. She has collaborated with artists across genres and has held several land art residencies, enjoying work where she could celebrate her love of nature: by the ocean in California, in the high desert of New Mexico, villages of south India & in country parks, rural regions of the U.K. Her most recent publication is a pamphlet with drawings in Japanese water-colour by Elizabeth Stuart-Smith (Flarestack 2008). 06/03/2009 Revolution, Literature and Latin America 7.15 for 7.30 pm £3/£2

Jim Knight took a course in Latin American studies at the University of Liverpool, specialising in literary representations of social conflict. He went on to do a research MA on the emergence of a revolutionary writers’ movement known as the ‘Committed Generation’ in El Salvador. He is currently completing PhD research on perceptions of violence in Salvadoran literature from before, during and after the country’s recent civil war.

Dan Amor was brought up in Penmachno, where he now lives. BBC Radio Cymru and Radio Wales listeners will be familiar with his material, and John Peel played two of his songs. His second album, Adlais (‘Echo’), is out now on Recordiau Cae Gwyn Records, his own label. The record bears a strong 60s and 70s influence. Dan records with John Lawrence, former member of Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci. Ben Ellis sings harmonies.

Dilynodd Jim Knight gwrs mewn astudiaethau America Lladinaidd ym Mhrifysgol Lerpwl, yn arbenigo mewn portreadau llenyddol o wrthdaro cymdeithasol. Aeth ymlaen i wneud MA ymchwil ar ymddangosiad y mudiad awduron chwyldroadol a elwir yn ‘Committed Generation’ yn El Salfador. Ar hyn o’r bryd, mae Jim yn cwblhau PhD ymchwil ar ganfyddiadau o drais mewn llenyddiaeth Safladoriaidd, o’r cyfnodau yn arwain at, ac yn dilyn y Rhyfel Cartref.

‘Ond aros yn y lle rhwng y ddau’ – Aled Jones Williams

The ‘between’ stands for what is shared ‘between us’ as people and also that often elusive ‘between’ place, between opposites/polarities, that is spiritually dynamic, experiential and that which the various wisdom traditions testify to being the most subtle, profoundly alive and richly meaningful place in us. The exploration of ‘rhwng’ encompasses an on-going, interdisciplinary programme of talks, workshops, discussion groups and performances. There is an emphasis on participation drawing on and promoting the talents of the Society. The guiding idea behind this Society – that of ‘rhwng’ – will hopefully promote exploration in a broad sense. The spirit of the Society is one of open-minded enquiry, which emphasises a move from ‘either/or’ to ‘and’ language. It includes, for instance, theories and practices; engages intellect but also feeling; honours experience and explores what it means to be sentient, creative beings embedded in mysterious life. Each programme includes events rooted in the arts (e.g. literature, music, visual arts) along with various religious/spiritual traditions. Ecological, philosophical and psychological approaches are all viable aspects of enquiry within the Society.

Cymdeithas yng Nghanolfan Ucheldre sy’n cynnig rhaglen ryngddisgyblaethol o ddigwyddiadau thematig sy’n archwilio syniad ‘rhwng’, drwy gyfrwng sgyrsiau, gweithdai a pherfformiadau. A Life in Verse

Tony Conran and friends will present readings from his latest publication What Brings You Here So Late? – a single, autobiographical poem which movingly evokes what it was like to grow up with cerebral palsy in wartime Wales, then being a student, poet and Catholic in Bangor, the Thatcher years and finally facing surgery to halt increasing paralysis – and also from recent work.
